We have a new leadership opportunity in our Customs Counter Terrorism (CT) team.
We're looking for a leader who, ideally, has first-hand intelligence work experience or has worked in a counter terrorism environment.
This is a Supervising Customs Officer - Intelligence role, which means you'll be managing people and operational work.
You will have demonstrable leadership skills and experience coaching and mentoring others.
You are approachable, supportive and willing to help.
You make decisions with your team members' wellbeing in mind.
You remain calm and level-headed in stressful situations.
As a leader, you'll need to develop your team, oversee intelligence and operational activities, liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders, undertake operational planning, and manage resourcing.
You'll create and review processes to manage work and make improvements, along with assessing team members' work in the field and in the office.
You'll also foster open, trust-based relationships and model the integrity and discretion expected of all team members.
Working alongside your Chief Customs Officer, you will be assisting with the overall direction and leadership of the CT Intelligence team.
The CT Intelligence team relies on 24/7 and flexible coverage.
As an operational leader, like your team, there may be times when you are expected to work long hours.
You may start or finish work in the middle of the night or in the early hours of the morning.
You may also need to work on weekends and holidays.
This may also include being deployed to other regions to assist the wider team.
This position sits within a salary band of $87,772 - $110,453 plus an annual allowance of $4,301 for working predictable hours with the possibility of having to respond.

To be successful in this role you will need to be able to demonstrate the following:
Experience in people leadership and exposure to intelligence team leadership within a NZ Government Department.
Excellent management and coordination skills to enable Customs contribution into cross-agency strategic intelligence efforts.
Demonstrated experience in stakeholder outreach and engagement.
A proven ability to identify and manage risks at an operational level and identify and communicate in a timely manner, any risk management issues.
Strong problem solving capability, including the ability to identify problems, manage or mitigate risks and implement innovative solution based outcomes.
A proven track record of building and sustaining a range of strong relationships and providing a high quality service to clients and stakeholders.
Effective communication which demonstrates a high standard of written and oral communication skills appropriate to a variety of audiences, can manage interaction with internal and external clients with professionalism, consideration and courtesy.
Strong computer/technology skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn and use Customs and other computer applications with confidence.
Ability to achieve and maintain Top Secret Special
• security clearance.

To work for the New Zealand Customs Service in this role, you must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance by meeting the following requirements:
Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident
Residing in New Zealand at the time of application
Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years
• You must have a clear Police record, a full New Zealand drivers licence and be able to obtain an Organisational Security clearance.
Already having a Top Secret Special clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.
We'll guide you through the process.
You will also be asked to complete a drug screening test and medical.
• If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past 10 years, preferably in one or more of the following countries:
either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you may still meet the requirements for a 'Top Secret' clearance.
You will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
