About the Role
As a Reserve Legal Officer, you will work in areas such as military law, military and civilian employment law, or human rights and privacy law. Legal Advisors (LEGADs) in the New Zealand Defence Force operate in what could be best described as a 'Specialised General Practice'.
Your responsibilities may include:
Providing legal advice to all levels of command on topics such as disciplinary matters, military justice procedure, and civilian employment disputes.
Assisting with the formulation of policy and providing legal training and education.
Representing the Crown in the Court Martial of New Zealand or other courts and tribunals, depending on your experience.
Working in a tri-service environment alongside Navy, Army, Air Force, and civilian colleagues.
Potentially serving overseas on exercises or deployments.
Career Progression and Training
During your first 11 months in the Navy, you will receive core military, mariner, and leadership skills training. This includes:
Basic Training - Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT): Nine days at Devonport Naval Base and the Tamaki Leadership Centre.
Ongoing job training as a Legal Officer conducted in-house.
Promotion opportunities based on hard work, experience, and training accomplishments.
Reservists commit to a minimum of 20 days' service each year for professional development, which includes full-time training and weekend training.
Salary
The initial daily rate for a Reserve Legal Officer is $231.09, with remuneration increasing upon promotion and seniority.
Entry Requirements
Must have completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Applicants in their final year of study are encouraged to apply.
Be free of any criminal convictions for the previous two years.
Be of good character, assessed by testimonials and a police record check.
Pass an Officer Selection Board.
Must be medically fit for service and meet minimum entry fitness standards.
