About the Team

Haringey Youth Justice Service remains part of the Children and Young People’s Directorate located within the Early Help, Prevention and SEND Division.

We are committed to work in a systemic way to prevent children and young people from offending and reoffending, to ensure that custody is the last option, and that children and young people are safe, secure and provided with supportive interventions that address the causes of offending behaviour.

About You

The ideal candidate will have at least three years’ experience managing within the Criminal Justice Service and must hold a relevant qualification of social work and/or criminal justice.

The candidate must have a deep knowledge and understanding of youth justice and children’s legislation and the ability to build strong working relationships with key partners and stakeholders.

The candidate will need to be a resilient and authoritative manager who places children and young people and their welfare at the heart of their practice. The candidate will oversee a team that manages complex cases, planning intervention and support in a timely manner and, always, making sure that children and young people’s voices are heard, positively influence practice, and recorded consistently.

This post will primarily have oversight for the Out of Court Disposals team (including Turnaround), Parenting and Transition to Adult Probation Services.

To contribute to the management of the multi-disciplinary youth justice service in order to meet the Youth Justice Strategic Priorities over the next three years:

Priority 1: Child First; For the YJSPB and YJS to continue our commitment to child first approach which should be incorporated in all aspects of service delivery, governance and quality assurance.

Priority 2: Restorative Justice; Increase the number of victims that engage in Restorative Justice processes and improve their outcomes.

Priority 3: YJS Health Offer; To increase the uptake of the health offer and improve health outcomes, particularly in relation to EMH, SLT and substance misuse using trauma informed approaches.

Priority 4: Disproportionality; Increase the focus of disproportionality within the context of remands/ sentenced into custody, education, health and stop and search.

Priority 5: Children in Care; To improve entry to ETE, Health and Wellbeing outcomes for those children in care, CP, CIN and SEND cohort.

Priority 6: Serious Youth Violence; Strengthen and expand our evidence-based approaches to reduce levels of Serious Youth Violence in particular Robbery and Knife crime.

Priority 7: Prevention and Diversion; Increase the number of children and families supported by our prevention offer.

About the Role

The post holder reports to the Head of Service.

The post holder has line management responsibility of up to 6 staff

The post holder will be required to work evenings and weekends as required by the nature of the service.

The post holder has no responsibility for the service budget.

The post has first line management responsibility for the delivery of statutory youth justice service and prevention services within the London Borough of Haringey.

This will include:

Supporting the Head of Service in the development and implementation of all YJS policies and procedures.

Implementation of YJS performance management, quality assurance processes, Health and Safety Procedures and the team Workforce Development Strategy.

Taking responsibility and working jointly with partner agencies and social work managers to ensure that the team delivers high performance standards, fulfils its statutory obligations particularly in relation to national standards and achieves the targets associated with both performance (currently National Indicators, Preventing/Reducing Offending) and quality of service (all risk assessments completed and checked, all intervention and risk plans completed and checked, service users fully participate in the delivery of their service etc).

Contributing to the organisation, planning and completion of the borough’s agreed YJS annual self-assessment and youth justice plan.

Responsible for the implementation and development of a comprehensive framework for delivering ‘risk led’ youth justice services that ensures YJS resources are targeted based on the level of assessed risk. That all young people are subject to a thorough risk assessment.

Supports on ensuring that there are clear procedures in place for the management of high risk young people that link directly to MAPPA and Safeguarding procedures.

Responsible for the development of all aspects of YJS prevention services and the statutory YJS services including interventions for young people, parents and victims ensuring non oppressive practice and equality of opportunity and for the delivery of effective court services
