Our client is looking for someone to join their team who needs to be competent in the management and compliance of manual handling both patient and inanimate loads and display screen activities being up to speed in both areas of legislation with a proven track record of delivering on both these areas healthcare an advantage.
Those are key areas but are not limited to.
The key areas to be able to cover are:
• Risk management – supporting and advising on the completion of risk assessments, ensuring controls in place are suitable, providing advice on equipment, training in equipment use
Audit, monitor, review - ensuring policies are up to date and meet legal compliance, auditing risk assessment completion and compliance/application of training, policy audit.
Re data – this would be bi monthly as expected to provide information to the Health & Safety Committee and to attend that group as the competent person in manual handling and ergonomics (DSE specific)
Undertake specialist DSE assessments and training in equipment use/set up.
Records of all activities should be kept for audit trail

Summary
The post holder will act as the Trusts competent person in manual handling and ergonomics.
You will support and ensure the Trust meets its legal duties in relation to manual handing and ergonomics through delivery of manual handling and display screen equipment policies and procedures.
The post holder will be responsible for conducting all training activities related to manual handling, ensuring employees are compliant with statutory/mandatory requirements and that adequate training needs analysis, and bespoke training solutions are undertaken.
The role will also be responsible for triangulating data related to MSDs to identify hot spots and implement plans for improvement.
The post holder is responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are monitored, audited and reviewed regularly which will include data analysis, the triangulation of data including sickness absence to identify hot spots for improvement planning.
You will also be a key attendee at the Trust Health & Safety Committee providing assurance on all matters relating to this job role.
Key duties and responsibilities
To be the Trust’s recognised competent person on matters relating to manual handling and ergonomics (clinical and non-clinical), demonstrating a working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, subject knowledge and professional issues pertinent to the role of working within the limits of own competence.
To lead on delivery and implementation of policies and procedures in relation to manual handling and ergonomics including the Manual Handling & DSE Policies respectively.
Ensuring these are up to date with current legislation and practice, periodically reviewed and audited and monitored for effectiveness.
To promote and develop a safety culture, delivering a strategy aimed at reducing musculoskeletal injuries within the Trust.
To manage and further develop the Trust’s manual handling systems and processes in order that the highest standards are maintained.
To advise and support managers and staff in risk identification, risk assessment and risk reduction.
To support, develop, deliver and evaluate practical and theoretical training in manual handling to ensure the Trust meets its statutory obligations under the Health & Safety at Work etc.
Act 1974 and The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (and any other relevant legislation).
To provide advice and guidance relating to manual handling within area of responsibility and respond to patient referrals relating to complex handling cases.
The post holder will be expected to organise his/her workload with minimal supervision.
Provide proactive and reactive advice and recommendations to managers and staff to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
To advise on and trial manual handling equipment in order to ensure staff and patients have access to most suitable equipment available.
To provide advice, support and information on all manual handling and ergonomic issues involving moving and handling of people and loads so that risks to employees and other service users are minimised.
To advise on safe working procedures and be able to adapt training and handling techniques to meet the needs of the local department/individual patient and speciality.
To undertake regular reviews including inspections and audits of the management of manual handling within the Trust and report findings to Board, Committees and managers as relevant.
To advise the Trust Board, Committees, managers and staff on relevant legislation and best practice.
To provide assurance to the Health & Safety Advisor and the Trust Health & Safety Committee in relation to compliance with legislation and directives e.g.
Health & Safety Executive and Care Quality Commission.
