As a Timber Scaling Specialist, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of the forest industry in our province.

Key Responsibilities:

• Policy Development & Support:
  Provide expert advice on provincial policies related to scaling and revenue under the Forest Products Scaling Code.
• Sample Scaling Plan Review:
  Approve and review sample scaling plans to ensure they meet provincial standards, ensuring accurate volume determination for dues and fees.
• Industry Collaboration:
  Work with industry partners to identify solutions that improve efficiency while ensuring compliance with the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations.
• Data Analysis & Trend Prediction:
  Anticipate trends and analyze data that could affect the integrity of sampling programs.
• Technical Expertise:
  Advise policy makers and industry stakeholders to enhance the accuracy and transparency of scaling analysis for revenue calculation.
• Compliance & Enforcement Leadership:
  Lead compliance initiatives and support the development of branch directives and scaling compliance reports.
• Training & Mentorship:
  Oversee the administration of scaling data systems and mentor staff in scaling practices, including delivering the Licensed Scalers Course.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• Expert Knowledge:
  Understanding of the Forest Resources Management Act, its regulations, and scaling/reporting of wood volumes.
• Policy & Compliance Experience:
  Proven experience in policy development, especially in scaling compliance and volume control frameworks.
• Problem-Solving Skills:
  Ability to address complex issues and develop practical solutions under tight timelines and diverse perspectives.
• Familiarity with Standards:
  Knowledge of Canadian Standards Association standards and other provincial scaling programs.
• Project Management:
  Capable of managing multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, and adapting to changing demands.
• Team Leadership:
  Experience in leading teams, fostering a productive and inclusive work environment, and ensuring operational efficiency.
• Stakeholder Engagement:
  Skilled in maintaining professional and respectful relationships with industry partners, licensees, and forest product permit holders.
• Conflict Resolution:
  Ability to mediate difficult situations with tact and professionalism.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Field Work & Travel:
  This position involves operating a 4-wheel drive pick-up truck, off-road vehicles, and working in remote, year-round field conditions throughout the province.

Qualifications:

• Education:
  Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or a related field with significant experience in forest operations and scaling.
• Licensing:
  A valid driver's license and eligibility for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) within three years of starting. A current scaling license or permit is an asset.
