Position Summary:

1. True generalist role requiring a strategic mindset and proven expertise in both legal and business domains.
2. As the sole lawyer, responsible for managing and addressing all legal matters including litigation and commercial and corporate, competition, marketing and advertising, intellectual property, franchising, real estate, M&A, and privacy law.
3. As a member of Executive Team, responsible for providing sensible and balanced advice on all matters.
4. Reports to the President.

Hiring Requirements:

1. Manage complex litigation including advising on strategy, tactics, and pleadings, and instruct and collaborate with external counsel.
2. Provide sound legal advice to Executive Team and cross-functional teams that strikes a balance between compliance, business needs, and long-term strategy.
3. Collaborate with and support the legal needs of cross-functional teams in Marketing, Sales, Distribution, Finance, Real Estate, Supply Chain, R+D, Procurement, and Treasury.
4. Manage external counsel relationships, scope of work, files, and fees.
5. Work closely with external counsel on complex or significant matters.
6. Actively engage as a member of Executive Team.
7. Collaborate with and/or support colleagues in other business units and Global Corporate head office.
8. Support compliance with internal policies, develop and deliver compliance training programs, and advise on governance matters.
9. Anticipate issues, estimate risks strategically and practically, and make sound recommendations on mitigation strategies.
10. Keep abreast of legislative changes and industry trends.
11. Possess strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide timely, pragmatic, and focused advice.

Experience & Education:

1. General counsel experience in a business environment and/or minimum six years of experience in a top-tier law firm and/or large in-house legal department.
2. Overall broad legal knowledge and experience, with demonstrated expertise in corporate governance and regulatory compliance; must have experience with litigation.
3. Strong financial acumen and well-versed in how business operates.
4. Ability to develop legal strategies and objectives and make decisions in high-pressure or fluid environments.
5. Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks, and to "see around the corner".
6. Ability to work independently while building strong internal partnerships.
7. High degree of professional ethics, integrity, and gravitas.
8. Excellent judgment and analytical skills.
9. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
10. LLB or JD degree.
11. Member of Law Society of Ontario (other common law provinces will be considered).
12. Bilingual (French and/or Spanish), business degree, civil law degree, and Quebec Bar are assets.
13. Available for occasional travel within Canada and internationally including to Mexico, Central America, and South America.
14. Demonstrated experience working with senior management and executives in a dynamic and matrixed environment.
