Mainframe Back-End Software Engineer

Manulife is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mainframe Back-End Software Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing, programming, testing, and maintaining large-scale backend and client-server applications. You will craft, develop, test, and detail Mainframe APIs that are used by various other teams' client applications. You will also be required to help develop, document and test . NET services which interact with these APIs. This position is primarily back-end focused and also involves the knowledge of integrating with mainframe systems, cloud-based solutions and databases.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Mainframe API and Application Development:
   
   • Design, develop, test, maintain, and improve application APIs and . NET services as a member of a team.
   • Work across key data, orchestration, rules, and transactional stacks through the entire application and system development life cycle.
   • Translate user requirements into software requirements and build code to specifications and standards from simple to moderately sophisticated software.
2. Agile Methodology:
   
   • Participate in Agile sprints and ceremonies to support rapid iteration and development.
   • Promote Agile principles and methodology.
3. Software Development and Testing:
   
   • Analyze, code, and test software components as defined by the Product Owner (PO) and team.
   • Write clear, readable and maintainable code, taking ownership of the quality and usability of code.
   • Build and conduct executable tests, continuously integrating code into the overall software framework.
   • Familiar with modern software architectures and development using APIs.
   • Review current software framework to identify defects and opportunities to improve performance and stability.
   • Ensure completion of any required documentation, such as deployment, maintenance, support, and business needs.
4. Technical Research and Strategy:
   
   • Research technical strategies, third-party tools, and current and new technologies to address emerging technical issues and improve development efficiency.
   • Apply principled coding practices to enable agility and delivery of high-quality code.
5. Collaboration and Mentorship:
   
   • Collaborate with team members, participate in code reviews, and share skills and methods.
   • Efficiently communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators.

What are we looking for:

1. Experience:
   
   • 4+ years of experience in back-end application development, including Restful APIs and Application Development.
   • Must have strong experience with COBOL.
   • Experience with any of the following:
     
   • Familiarity with DB2, CICS, VSAM, JCL, SAS, Endevor, and Control-M.
2. Technical Skills:
   
   • Familiar with modern software architectures, development using APIs, and scripting languages.
   • Experienced using Github, Jenkins, SNYK, SonarQube, and CI/CD Pipelines.
   • Nice to have familiarity with Azure.
3. Education:
   
   • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
4. Communication and Collaboration:
   
   • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; efficiently articulate technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes.
   • Collaborative attitude with the ability to work with team members, mentor, participate in code reviews, and share skills and methods.
   • Good interpersonal and problem-solving abilities that enable you to handle through creative abrasion.

$75,880. 00 CAD - $140,920. 00 CAD
