SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Greenhouse Manager is a dynamic position responsible for the day-to-day organization and management of the greenhouse and hydroponic facility, while fostering a team environment with staff and community. Duties include but are not limited to: budget development and adherence; funding applications, monitoring, and reporting; hiring and managing seasonal staff; overseeing the greenhouse cafe initiative; overseeing contracting and permitting; promoting garden education; and other duties as needed.

REPORTING:

The Manager reports directly to the Community Garden Society of Inuvik (CGSI) board chair. Written reports are to be presented at board meetings, and detailed quarterly and yearly reports will be required. Additional reports may be requested by the board throughout the year.

HOURS/TIME OF WORK AND PAY:

Pay rate will be at $30 per hour + a Northern Allowance of $7 per hour. This position is open to those eligible to work in Canada. Hours of work will total 40hrs per week, subject to seasonal need. The employee will receive 10 personal days + 15 vacation days per year. This is a flexible in-person position during the summer, with work from home during the off-season, and is based in Inuvik. Relocation assistance is possible.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Management of the operations:
    • Plan and oversee production with the Coordinator. Negotiate and order supplies and meet targets for successful annual and weekly sales, events, and workshops.
    • Research, complete, and track funding agreements - with assistance from the CGSI Board.
    • Maintain accurate financial records including spending, income, payroll - with assistance from the CGSI board and CGSI bookkeeper.
  2. Coordinate and supervise staff:
    • Create work plans for group tasks and projects.
    • Supervise and schedule Coordinator and Hydroponic technician and oversee schedules for other staff. Meet with Coordinator and technician weekly to establish progress and areas of opportunity and to discuss volunteer opportunities for the upcoming weeks.
    • Oversee and coordinate greenhouse fundraisers along with the coordinator.
  3. Facility and Equipment Maintenance:
    • Coordinate preventative and ongoing maintenance for the greenhouse facility and equipment with input from staff/Board of Directors as required.
    • Oversee the startup of the greenhouse facility at the beginning of the season according to the operations manual and assist when required.
    • Oversee and assist when required the winterization of the greenhouse at the end of the season according to the operations manual.
  4. Client Service, administration, and marketing/promotions:
    • In collaboration with other staff, respond to greenhouse phone calls, emails, and social media messages and when required, manage memberships, rentals, and garden plot maps.
    • Encourage participation via promotion of our services and mandate through our media channels.
    • Act as a spokesperson for the organization and continually showcase it in a positive light.
  5. Reporting:
    • Prepare monthly written status reports for the Board of Directors.
    • Prepare a quarterly report containing information including feedback on the season, opportunities for improvement, project recommendations, and production plans for the upcoming season, volunteer hour balance sheets, plot maps, and any other information deemed pertinent for the continued success of the greenhouse or requested by the Board of Directors.
    • Ensure that reporting deadlines are met for all contribution agreements.

The incumbent may be required to perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Post-secondary education in business management/administration preferred or relevant experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a supervisory role including experience in a team environment.
  • Previous experience working in a community setting with a board of directors would be considered an asset.

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Communications skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Previous experience in successful applications for funding would be an asset.
    • Marketing and promotions skills.
    • The ability to delegate effectively.
    • The ability to lead by example.
  2. Interpersonal, teamwork & leadership abilities:
    • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team to motivate, coach, and manage performance of staff to achieve positive results.
    • Confident and comfortable in relationship building skills with many levels of end customers (Board, Staff, Public, residents, and all stakeholders).
  3. Research, analytical and administrative skills:
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Strategic thinking skills, including the ability to identify risks and opportunities.
    • Knowledge of fundamentals of business plan development, cash flow planning, analysis, and record keeping.
    • Ability to accurately define and effectively address problems as they arise.
    • Ability to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  4. Organizational Skills:
    • Ability to work on a number of projects and tasks simultaneously and prioritize accordingly.
    • Flexibility, including the ability to adapt to work effectively within a variety of situations and with various individuals or groups.
    • Ability to create and follow through with plans as outlined.
  5. Other Skills:
    • An understanding and respect of local Indigenous cultures.
    • Any gardening experience is considered an asset.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours (hours vary seasonally based on plant production and operational needs).
  • Full availability from April to September is required. No leave during peak times.
  • Outdoor field work may be required.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work daily in contact with plants, plant pollen, dust, and soil.
  • Working from home during the winter/colder months is required.
  • Other duties may be required as need arises.
