We are seeking an experienced Engineering Lead, P & C to lead our Protection and Controls team at Nova Scotia Power. This key leadership position will manage a diverse team of 5-7 professionals, including Technologists and Senior Protection and Controls Engineers, while driving technical excellence and innovation in our power systems infrastructure.

The position is based in Halifax Regional Municipality, based out of the Beechville, Nova Scotia office (formerly referred to as Lakeside), and will require occasional travel throughout Nova Scotia. The Protection and Controls Lead will serve as a technical authority and people leader, responsible for overseeing critical engineering functions across Nova Scotia Power's transmission and distribution network. This role bridges technical expertise with strategic leadership, ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of our power system while adapting to emerging industry challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership
    • Direct the engineering design and implementation of transmission protection systems across all voltage levels (69kV to 345kV).
    • Provide protection input to control building design and primary equipment selection.
    • Lead the development and maintenance of protection standards and guidelines.
    • Manage relay configurations and standardization across transmission and distribution systems.
    • Oversee distribution protection engineers.
    • Guide the technical direction for protection scheme designs and modifications.
    • Collaborate with the Senior Technical Advisor to implement and enforce company-wide standards.
  • Strategic Management
    • Develop and implement innovative processes to enhance design efficiency and project delivery.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with external partners and consultants.
    • Evaluate and implement new technologies, including automation and AI solutions.
    • Create and oversee outsourcing models to optimize resource utilization.
    • Lead change management initiatives to improve team effectiveness.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Team Leadership
    • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 5-7 technical professionals.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
    • Lead performance management and professional development initiatives.
    • Ensure knowledge transfer and succession planning within the team.

These skills will make you successful:

Required Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering license (P. Eng) in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia, or eligible for transfer.
  • 10+ years of experience in Protection and Controls engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Extensive experience with protection schemes in transmission systems (69kV-345kV).
  • Demonstrated expertise with Schweitzer relays and protection equipment.
  • Strong understanding of IEC61850 and other common protocols.
  • Proven experience with substation primary equipment including:
    • Circuit breakers (bulk oil, SF6, mixed gas)
    • Instrument transformers (PTs and CTs)
    • Power transformers (5-50+ MVA)
    • Experience with both transmission and power production substations.
  • Strong project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and industrial networking.
  • Knowledge of power system modeling and simulation.
  • Experience with independent power producer integration.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with digital substation technologies.
  • Background in system planning and protection coordination studies.
