The Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires (Commissionaires) is seeking volunteer board members for the Board of Governors.

Whether you are an ex-military or law enforcement officer, or a leader in the private sector, the Commissionaires may be a great way to serve those who served our country.
Our social mandate is to provide meaningful employment to veterans of the military or police force as they transition to civilian life.
We are seeking your expertise as we enter a new era of the security industry in Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia.

There are currently positions available and we are seeking experts from various backgrounds as but not limited to:

Accounting and business financial management.
Legal services
Security Industry
Human Resource Management
Public relations
Marketing
IT
Private Sector Leaders/Business owners

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

10+ years in the workforce in leadership roles; Military, Police or Private Sector
Relevant university degree or equivalent
Experience in strategic planning, finance, and accounting, and/or board governance
Military or Policing experience, or an understanding of the culture of the uniform through personal experience (i.e., family of veterans, military or police, or commissionaires
Knowledge of English and French would be an asset

Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) is the province's not-for-profit provider of security, safety, training, and identification services.
We are an independent member of Commissionaires Canada, our parent federation employing over 22,000 nationwide.
We exist to provide meaningful employment for veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, their families, and anyone else who wants to contribute to the security and well-being of Nova Scotians.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The CNS - Board of Governors, consists of approximately 16 volunteer members.
They work with the CNS management team to provide strategic direction for the Division and exercise oversight of operations and resource expenditure.
The Board meets six times yearly:
four quarterly meetings, an annual general meeting, and a professional development session.
Meetings are typically 1-3 hours in duration and can be attended in person at the Head Office in Bedford, NS or virtually via Microsoft Teams.
Travel-related expenses are reimbursed.
The desired commitment would be 3-5 years.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Board members are expected to read relevant material prior to each meeting and could be asked to serve on various committees, with the potential to expand into an executive position on the Board.
In a typical year, members could expect to put in up to 100 hours per year depending on the needs of the position they hold.

Strategic Vision.

Working with the CEO, and the Board of Governors, ensures the strategic leadership and growth of the organization.
Working with the CEO, the board helps to assess strategic risk for the organization and mitigation strategies.
The Board approves the annual operational plan including resource allocation and budget.
The Board provides oversight on the budgeting and reconciliation process in the Division.

Board Governance

The Board's role is to provide strategic guidance, support, and oversight in cooperation with the CEO.
(The Board is not involved in the day-to-day management of the operation)
The Board executes its tasks in accordance with provincial legislation, national constitution, and bylaws, and the Division Constitution and bylaws.
The Board is responsible for maintaining the Division policies and bylaws.
The Board provides direction and oversight of the CEO and the Board Administrator.
It is responsible for performance evaluation and remuneration levels for these two roles.

Business Development

The Board acts as a sounding board for the CEO for new business initiatives and is the approving authority for acquisitions.
The Board Members support business development by opening doors for management through their contacts in their communities.

Promoting the Division

Board Members are expected to promote the Division via their business and political contacts.
Board Members could be called upon to attend ceremonial activities such as presenting long service awards to Commissionaires in their communities.
