The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Pediatric Perioperative Services, the Clinical Leader Development (CLD) acts as a resource to interdisciplinary team members by identifying, prioritizing, implementing, and evaluating strategies that support competency development and maintenance of team members. The CLD has overall responsibility for the coordination of orientation and ongoing continuing education associated with new and returning staff, new preceptors, practice and equipment changes, quality initiatives, and family-centered care.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Facilitates ongoing orientation (multi-disciplinary) and learning for new and transferring staff, as well as learner placement initiatives.
  2. Demonstrates support and commitment to professional development.
  3. Mentors team members through supporting, teaching, role modeling, and coaching.
  4. Mentors preceptors in performance review process for new staff.
  5. Identifies clinical issues requiring staff education and works collaboratively with the Manager, Perioperative Team Members, Clinical Leaders, and Anesthesia Assistant Team Leader to address learning needs.
  6. Role models professional practice and promotes safe practice.
  7. Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient/family care issues.
  8. Responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process in the delivery of family-centered care consistent with the philosophy, objectives, vision, and mission of the IWK Health Centre.

Hours of Work:
7.5 hours Monday - Friday (flexibility required)

Your Qualifications:

  1. Registered, or eligible to be registered, with Nova Scotia College of Nursing required.
  2. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required (candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered).
  3. Minimum of one (1) year of recent clinical nursing experience in a pediatric perioperative setting required.
  4. Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required.
  5. PALS course required or willing to obtain prior to the start date of assignment.
  6. Current certification in appropriate BELC (Beyond Entry Level Competencies) required.
  7. Recent experience with preceptor role an asset.
  8. Recent leadership experience is an asset.
  9. Demonstrated ability to lead in a busy, fast-paced environment required.
  10. CNA Certification in perianesthesia nursing an asset.
  11. Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning required.
  12. Completed continuing education in adult education/learning, leadership or team training an asset.
  13. Demonstrated time management, communication (verbal & written), organizational, and interpersonal skills required.
  14. Demonstrated leadership, delegation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills involving innovation/creativity in solution development.
  15. Proven team building, leadership, and goal development and evaluation skills.
  16. Competencies in other languages considered an asset.
