We are looking for a motivated paralegal/law clerk to become an integral member of our growing legal practice and team.

JSU LAW is a litigation law firm that practices in Ontario and Nova Scotia, where we also provide litigation support services to other lawyers and law firms. While we're based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we are a fully remote firm.

We are a law practice that emphasizes professionalism, practicality, and balance. This approach guides our advice to our clients, and will guide our working relationship with you.

Take the lead on Ontario Small Claims Court files*;
Work directly with the firm's owner and principal lawyer, a former Bay Street litigator at McCarthy Tétrault; and
Work directly with our firm's lawyer-clients as part of our dynamic Litigation Support program.

We will provide you with:

Base salary range between $50,000 - $65,000;

Your skills/qualifications:

Graduate of a paralegal or law clerk program, or equivalent experience working in the legal industry;
Motivated self-starter, with the capacity to take on and manage work independently, and the ability to research issues and find answers to questions as they arise;
Strong organizational and time management skills, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once;
Analytical with very strong proofreading skills and attention to detail;
Excellent written and verbal communication for a professional audience and setting;
Customer service oriented;
Strong tech literacy, and proficiency with relevant software suites (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PDF editors, etc.);
Familiarity with the Ontario and Nova Scotia Rules of Civil Procedure, and Ontario and Nova Scotia Court practice directions is an asset; and
Financial/accounting literacy is an asset.

Your responsibilities:

Legal work, including:

Drafting correspondence to clients, opposing parties and counsel, and courts;
Maintaining and managing files and client documents;
Assistance in the preparation of chronologies and first drafts of court documents;
Reviewing, analyzing, and cataloguing evidence; and
Legal research

Administrative and office management work, including:

Greeting and corresponding with clients, conducting client intake, completing conflict searches, and opening/closing client files;
Booking client meetings, and maintaining schedules and calendars;
Basic accounting work such as invoicing, and tracking receipts and expenses;
Assisting with business development research; and
Occasional assistance with public-facing firm material, such as LinkedIn and firm blog posts.
