Level 2 System Administrator

JOB SUMMARY

Our company is seeking a L2 System Administrator to join our team in the Greater Victoria Region. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading a team of L1/L2 staff for installing, evaluating, detecting, and troubleshooting a variety of issues affecting computer systems. This role includes diagnosing faulty hardware and software on thin client computers, as well as maintaining self-bag drop (SBD) and common-use passenger processing systems (CUPPS). Additionally, the System Administrator will provide support for AWS Cloud services and effectively resolve any related issues to ensure optimal functionality and user experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Install, Configure, and Maintain Systems
   Oversee the setup, installation, and configuration of hardware and software components, including thin client computers, to ensure seamless operation within the airport environment. This includes working with various operating systems, networks, and servers, as needed.
2. Monitor System Performance and Troubleshoot Issues
   Proactively monitor the performance of IT infrastructure and systems, diagnosing and resolving any technical issues, including hardware failures, software bugs, and connectivity problems. You will be expected to quickly identify the root cause of malfunctions and implement corrective measures to minimize downtime and disruptions.
3. Maintain SBD and CUPPS
   Ensure the efficient functioning of critical airport systems such as SBD and CUPPS, which are essential for passenger self-service and overall airport operations. You will perform regular system checks, updates, and maintenance to optimize performance and user experience.
4. Provide AWS Cloud Services Support
   Act as the point of contact for issues related to AWS Cloud services, ensuring that the systems hosted on AWS are performing optimally. This includes managing cloud resources, monitoring usage, securing cloud environments, and troubleshooting any cloud-related issues.
5. Diagnose Hardware and Software Faults
   Perform in-depth analysis and diagnostics to identify faulty hardware or software components. Once issues are identified, you will repair or replace components as necessary and ensure systems are restored to full functionality.
6. Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams
   Work closely with other IT professionals, airport personnel, and external vendors to ensure the smooth operation of systems. This may include coordinating with software developers, network engineers, and security teams to address complex issues.
7. Implement System Upgrades and Patches
   Update operating systems, software applications, and security patches to protect systems from vulnerabilities and ensure compatibility with the latest technology standards. You will also implement any necessary system improvements or enhancements.
8. Document Processes and Technical Issues
   Maintain detailed records of system configurations, installations, and maintenance activities. You will also document troubleshooting processes and resolutions for future reference and to enhance the knowledge base for the team.
9. Provide Technical Support and Training
   Offer on-site and remote technical support to users and team members, helping them resolve system issues quickly. In addition, provide training on system usage and best practices to ensure optimal use of IT resources.
10. Ensure System Security and Data Integrity
    Implement and enforce security protocols to protect sensitive information and ensure data integrity. You will work to secure both physical and cloud systems against potential cyber threats, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
11. Perform Preventive Maintenance
    Conduct regular system checks, hardware inspections, and software reviews to prevent system failures and improve overall reliability. This includes identifying potential risks or weaknesses and addressing them proactively.
12. Contribute to Process Improvements
    Continuously assess the effectiveness of current processes and contribute to the development and implementation of process improvements to enhance system performance and operational efficiency.
13. Lead Support Team
    Lead and manage support team of L1/L2 staff to ensure all tasks are completed within customer requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE

ESSENTIAL

• Level 2 System Administrator: Skilled in advanced system administration, with responsibilities spanning software, network management, and IT infrastructure, ensuring the seamless operation of systems in a high-demand environment.
• Proficient in virtualization technologies: Demonstrate expertise in virtualization platforms such as VMWare or equivalent technologies, applying this knowledge to enhance system efficiency and scalability.
• Expert in systems and networking technologies: Possess a strong understanding of systems and networking software, hardware integration, and key networking protocols, ensuring optimal system performance and connectivity.
• Experienced in scripting and automation: Utilize scripting and automation tools to streamline tasks, enhance system efficiency, and minimize manual interventions, contributing to a more productive and reliable IT infrastructure.
• Expert in IT operations and best practices: Demonstrate strong knowledge of helpdesk and IT operations best practices, including security protocols, storage solutions, data protection, and disaster recovery strategies, to ensure system resilience and security.
• Skilled in project planning and execution: Competent in planning, implementing, and following up on IT projects, ensuring that all project milestones are achieved and that systems are delivered within scope and on time.
• Oversee airline installations in the Denver Common Use environment: Manage the installation and integration of airlines into the Denver Common Use environment. Each installation will be treated as a project, requiring oversight and coordination to ensure successful and timely implementation.
• Contribute to new and ongoing projects: Actively participate in the development of new IT projects while maintaining and optimizing existing solutions, ensuring continuous improvement and operational excellence.
• Take ownership of projects from the initial concept through to successful completion, collaborating with Materna's subject matter experts in both the US and HQ. Leverage leadership and coordination skills to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet all objectives.

SKILLS /EXPERIENCE

Essential:

• Excellent knowledge of English (verbal and written)
• Aviation industry experience - either at an airport or airline
• Proficient with the widely used operating systems, such as Windows 7, Windows 10, Server 2012, 2016, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and knowledge of Linux.
• Required to obtain TSA Airport badging requirements
• Vendor certifications such as MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA A+ and Network+ Certifications in a predominantly Windows environment

Desirable:

• Bachelor's degree in a related subject such as Computer Science, Engineering, IT.
