Senior Analyst, Compliance Monitoring Load Settlement

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.
We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta's interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta's competitive wholesale electricity market.

Reporting to the Manager, Transmission Tariff and Load Settlements, this position is accountable for monitoring and analyzing the compliance of market participants with the requirements of Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) Rule 021, in accordance with the corresponding Compliance Monitoring Program.

You will also be responsible for a variety of compliance monitoring related research activities, the development of compliance related tools and documentation, as well as interactions with market participants, other AESO teams, and the AUC.

In this position, you will become the subject matter expert of policies and practices related to the load settlement function and you will represent the compliance monitoring perspective in a variety of discussions and workgroups regarding AUC Rule 021 development and application, market participant behavior, and data repositories.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

Monitoring:

• Perform monitoring and analysis with respect to AUC Rule 021 using existing models, systems, procedures, and reports.
• Prepare compliance monitoring related reports, letters, and documentation.
• Independently carry out research, perform analysis and prepare documentation in response to ad hoc requests stemming from role as an internal subject matter expert on issues requiring a compliance monitoring perspective.
• Develop new or lead the refinement of existing Compliance Monitoring Programs, including preparing supporting documentation, and execution of internal and external awareness.
• Develop new, or maintain and enhance existing, ad hoc SQL queries and reports or Excel/vb based compliance monitoring tools; oversee and provide input regarding enhancement to existing compliance monitoring tools.
• Lead specific projects as assigned.

Internal/External Stakeholder Interactions:

• Maintain and foster positive and cooperative working relationships with:
  
• market participants through interactions regarding various compliance processes (including information requests, complaints, referrals, deliverance of compliance presentations);
• the AUC through the referral process and other related matters; and
• other AESO teams through the reciprocal sharing of subject matter expertise.
• Identify and address opportunities to raise the profile and understanding of the AESO's compliance monitoring function within the AESO and externally.

Leadership Support:

• Provide ongoing support as a technical expert and identify/escalate higher risk or potentially controversial actions/referrals to the Manager.
• Represent Compliance Monitoring in internal or external discussions as necessary and requested.

What you'll bring to us:

• Undergraduate or graduate degree in Business, Economics, or other relevant discipline.
• A minimum 8 - 10 years of related experience in the electricity industry.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Alberta electric industry and ideally AUC Rule 021 and related governing legislation.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including the proven ability to review and draft written correspondence.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise judgment including the ability to work with large amounts of complex data, advanced software applications and execute basic software application queries.
• Experience in programming and/or ability to write SQL queries considered a strong asset.
