Specialist Gastrointestinal Surgery

The Incumbent is a Gastrointestinal Surgeon who provides specialized consulting, operative (major as well as minor/ elective as well as emergency) and attending services to patients of any age group, including diagnosis, pre- and post-operative care of all operative cases and procedures in the field of gastrointestinal tract and liver.
They are highly skilled specialists with a comprehensive understanding of all gastroenterological conditions that require surgical intervention as treatment options.

Responsibilities

• Is responsible for attending ambulatory and hospitalized surgical patients including cases of all degrees of complexity, which are within the area of competence and expertise; additionally providing surgical care of a more specialized nature.
  
• Proficiency in performing all basic endoscopic and colonoscopy procedures.
  
• Proficiency in performing all minimally invasive technology or laparoscopic surgery.
  
• Proficiency and expertise in performing traditional open surgeries.
  
• Surgeons work to meet established medical, ethical and legal rules in the field of state-of-the-art specialty clinics - Liver, Obesity, Colorectal, Hernia.
  
• The applicable surgical unit provides day-to-day work including management and peer review, monitoring and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided by all physicians within the clinical privileges, approved by the Credentials and Privileges Committee.
  
• The HOD is informed of unusual problems or actions taken regarding unusual cases.
  
• Performs all management functions and duties of a general surgeon and provides expert medical care for ambulatory and hospitalized patients, including pre- and post-operative cases and such surgical procedures as are within the incumbent's competence.
  
• Performs professional duties at out-patients.
  Surgical care is to be rendered to patients as assigned.
  
• Provides consultation services to physicians and other surgeons and specialists.
  
• Assumes after-hours responsibilities for the care of assigned surgical cases and makes daily rounds for those hospitalized.
  
• Orders diagnostic laboratory studies and X-ray examinations, determining the diagnosis and prescribing applicable therapy.
  
• Hands-on understanding with X-Rays, MRIs, and ultrasound scanning.
  
• Makes recommendations to the HOD regarding medical referrals.
  
• Adheres to the By-laws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Department and assures that work performed is in keeping with the established standards of the JCI.
  
• Consults with anesthesiologist on the choice of anesthesia to be used.
  
• Participates in the monthly staff meetings.
  
• Participates in hospital committee functions as assigned.
  
• Develops and promotes appropriate standards of departmental KPI's (Key performance indicators).
  

Qualifications

• Graduation from an approved Medical School, followed by:
  

- 1 year of mandatory Internship/housemanship.

- 3-year residency of General Surgery Residency.

- 3 years Residency training in a recognized residency culminating in procuring a super-specialization in Gastrointestinal Surgery .

• Current license in country of origin with Specialist Gastroenterologist UAE Issued Medical license or meet all the eligibility criteria as per the Department of Health (DoH) guidelines to practice in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
  
• 3 or more years' experience of practice in the field of Gastrointestinal Surgery post Specialty certification.
  
• English is required to prepare documentation and is used as the common language to communicate with different nationalities.
  Fluency in Hindi/Urdu is mandatory .
  Basic knowledge of medical Arabic desirable, not essential.
  
• Must be highly skilled in the particular field of practice, with mature clinical judgment and ability to provide professional leadership.
  He/she must have a thorough knowledge of Medical Department policies and procedures with particular reference to the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of his work; personality which inspires confidence and trust in his patients; and adhere to Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Organization.
  
• Must have a thorough knowledge of medical ethics.
